Mining Jobs Suffer Another Blow

In an industry already struggling to keep workers employed, Australia mining jobs suffer another loss as contractor Downer Mining decides to slash about 100 jobs from the Fortescue Metals Groups’ Christmas Creek iron ore operation located in the Pilbara region. A spokesperson for Downer recently revealed to news media that roughly 100 Australia mining jobs will be eliminated over the course of the next several days. The move is being made to ensure the company has the correct number of employees making the downsizing necessary. The job reduction will be taking place at the Christmas Creek One (CC21) mine according to an authorized spokesperson for Fortescue. Immediate redeployment of workers from this facility is not expected. The Fortescue spokesperson went on to say that the job cuts come as a result of overburden removal requirements.

This is fueling the need for the reduction of staff for that operation. The spokesperson also confirmed there have been no redundancies at the Cloudbreak mine located a short distance away. The reduction of Australia mining jobs by Downer has been steady at Downer over the last few months. BMA’s Goonyella Riverside coal mine lost 185 workers last week while the Boggabri coal mine saw the loss of 106 jobs in April. In order to initiate a program designed to reposition and improve the company’s chances to reduce costs, Peabody Energy eliminated more than 400 contractor jobs last week as well, leaving fewer Australia mining jobs available for industry workers.
